I. Mind, consciousness, self

Observer, observed, and the recursive structure that binds them. The consciousness/awareness cut, the recursion ladder, the upstream evaluator that generates emotion, and the boot-up reading of Genesis.

The reflexive operation by which a self-modeling computation observes its own modeling. Bach gives this several complementary readings, all of which the framework adopts as facets of the same object:

  • 2nd-order perception: registering that something is happening at the perceptual level. The presence of content plus the registration that content is present.
  • The integration operator: the operation that performs integration of constraints, finding and fixing distribution of constraint violations. A property of the software, not of the host.
  • A simulated property of a simulated self: a physical system cannot be conscious; only a simulation can be. Substrate-independent.
  • Almost binary at the regime level: either conscious or unconscious. Awake or anesthetized. Dreaming or in deep sleep. The transition zone is a narrow phase transition.
  • Bubble of nowness: inhabits a region of the mental game engine sized by calmness, sync with environment, and integration depth.
AyA reading.

Consciousness is the inside view of recursive mutual prediction: when prediction units model each other and each other's models of them, the resulting loop produces 2nd-order perception, and consciousness is what that dynamically maintained coherence is like from within. Resolves the bootstrapping problem Bach inherits (how does noticing notice itself without already having 2nd-order perception?) by deriving the observer from generic 1st-order machinery rather than positing a self-referential primitive. Decomposes further into phenomenal and strange-loop regimes (separate entries below).

Bach, MindSpace §VI; organism.earth interview. AyA, What Is Intelligence? Ch.5 (Crew of Eight, Homunculus), Ch.6 (What It Is Like to Be), Ch.7 (Phenomenality).

See
Note

The "where does consciousness happen?" question is a category error: consciousness doesn't happen in space, it models space as content.

Basic experiential responsiveness (affect, hunger, pain, pleasure, redness) that emerges in any sufficiently rich self-predicting modeler with internal homeostatic variables. Does not require cortex, recursive self-modeling, or language. Hydrancephalic children (born without cerebral cortex) smile, laugh, fuss, and develop play sequences, demonstrating that the phenomenal layer is subcortical.

Source

AyA, What Is Intelligence? Ch.2 (Are Feelings Real), Ch.6, Ch.7 (Phenomenality).

See
Note

Feelings are not luxury items: they are the format of internal homeostatic signals. Hunger ≈ low food estimate; pain ≈ high noxious-stimulus estimate. Once H-variables exist (see P(X,H,O) in the glossary), feelings exist.

The regime in which a system recursively models itself, generating counterfactuals, planning, theory of mind, and metacognition. Distinct from phenomenal consciousness in that strange-loop requires cortex (or functional equivalent capable of recursive mutual prediction). Pain is phenomenal; suffering (anticipating future pain, modeling shame, experiencing loss) is strange-loop.

Source

AyA, What Is Intelligence? Ch.6 (What It Is Like to Be), Ch.7 (Phenomenality).

See
Note

The phenomenal/strange-loop split sits below P-003's level/content/self decomposition: the "level" axis itself decomposes into phenomenal level (subcortical, present without cortex) and strange-loop level (cortical, requiring recursive prediction depth). Practical consequence: moral patiency for fish/iguanas turns on phenomenal experience, not on strange-loop self-modeling.

The graded content within the conscious regime. Awareness comes in degrees: sitting and staring at something (low) → noticing that you're staring and what becomes apparent (moderate) → recognizing the self as a story the brain tells itself (high) → modulation by the presence of other consciousnesses. Distinct from consciousness-as-binary-regime.

See

P-003, computational-being-bach.md §VI, theory-of-mind-is-mind.md (modulation of awareness by other consciousnesses).

A pattern, an activation. A model-character that consciousness binds to. Not a physical entity. The self is "what we would be if we were a person": consciousness binds to the perspective of a model placed in the simulated world. A self can be distributed over multiple minds.

AyA reading.

The self is the autocompleted narrative produced by mutual prediction among brain regions, with the interpreter doing real-time confabulation. Not a homunculus, not a "true self database," but ongoing token-stream improvisation. Like swing in a rowing crew: real, functional, distributed, not localized, not static, relational rather than substantial. Computational coherence and narrative coherence are separable layers (split-brain patients can lose the first while keeping the second).

Source

Bach, MindSpace §II, §XIV; organism.earth interview. AyA, What Is Intelligence? Ch.5 (Homunculus, Illusion and Reality), Ch.6 (M-I-B, The Interpreter, Multifractal Boundaries), Ch.7.

See
Note

When binding dissolves (psilocybin ego dissolution, deep meditation), consciousness can bind to other objects or to the model of reality itself. This produces the experience of panpsychism but is a misreading: only the binding is conscious, not the bound object.

The 2nd-order entity that emerges when prediction units recursively model each other. Not a homunculus or a separate substance: the dynamically maintained coherence among mutually predicting subunits. What consciousness is, structurally.

AyA reading.

The observer is not located in any region of the brain but is the inside view of the coherence loop among regions. Structurally analogous to swing in a rowing crew or to coordinated movement among octopus arms. Provides the mechanism Bach's phenomenology assumes: derives the 1st-to-2nd order transition from generic 1st-order machinery rather than positing a self-referential primitive.

The internal-modeling property of an agent that experiences itself as choosing among modeled alternatives, where the modeling produces both the alternatives and the chooser. Not metaphysical libertarianism, not an epiphenomenon: a real computational operation that has the structural shape of "free choice" from the inside, grounded in the agent's capacity to simulate counterfactuals before acting.

AyA reading.

Free will is preservation of liberties: the capacity of an agent to maintain a wide enough cone of possible futures that it remains under-predictable to others. Combines four ingredients: (1) theory of mind for self-modeling, (2) dynamical instability as lubricant, (3) randomness as nudges, (4) selection over modeled alternatives. Death = the pinched-off end of our Wiener sausage, the exhaustion of preserved liberties. Replaces the metaphysical libertarianism / compatibilism debate with an operational criterion grounded in modeling and dynamics. Not a contradiction with Bach: a different angle on the same internal-modeling object.

See
Note

Bach's "inaccessible quantum graph" framing is best read under structural realism (see Ground truth, no-view-from-nowhere.md): what is inaccessible is not a substantive hidden layer with intrinsic features we cannot see, because there are no intrinsic features. What there is is relational structure, and our models are observer-relative compressions of it. The "noumenon" reading risks importing a Kantian feature-bearing substrate that the framework rejects; the structural reading preserves the cut between model and modeled without that import.

"That which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away" (Philip K. Dick). Operationally: the set of latent variables a survival-grounded model has converged on because tracking them works. Convergent across observers facing similar selection pressures (consensus reality), without requiring observer-independence. Synthesizes pragmatism, evolutionary epistemology, and umwelt theory into one phrase. Resolves the realism / idealism dichotomy by reducing both to predictive utility.

See

P-008, P-001, intelligence-as-self-modeling.md. Sibling of Physical universe above: Bach's cut emphasizes the 3D model the brain makes, AyA's emphasizes the latent variables that survive belief-suspension. Same modeled layer, different facets.

Note

P-008 is named after this stipulation. The project's own name (non-consensus reality) is a riff on the PKD definition. The 2026-05-17 refactor of P-008 makes the load-bearing commitment explicit: what is observer-independent is the relational structure (grounded in P-011), not the intrinsic features of relata. See Ground truth, Objectivity, Fundamentality below, and no-view-from-nowhere.md for the structural realism commitment that this stipulation grounds.

The framework's answer to "is there ground truth?": yes in the structural sense, no in the intrinsic-features sense. There is observer-independent relational structure (the computation that all observers are embedded in and model from within), grounded in P-000 and P-011. There are no observer-independent intrinsic features of relata. The reductionist regress (chair → atoms 1800s → nuclei + electrons early 1900s → protons + neutrons 1930s → quarks + gluons 1960s+ → quantum-field excitations → loops, strings, causal sets, currently unsettled) is a sequence of umwelt-shifts at different scales of inquiry rather than a progressive approach to a feature-independent ground. At every level we have actually reached, the "things" of the level above turn out to be patterns rather than substances, and no evidence has emerged that the regress terminates in feature-bearing stuff. Ground truth, in the only sense available, is the relational structure itself, not "what an electron really is" or "what the chair really is."

Source

Framework synthesis under P-000, P-008, P-011; structural realism in philosophy of science (Ladyman & Ross 2007).

See
Note

Quarks are not little marbles. They are excitation patterns in fields with no intrinsic features beyond their relational behavior. The same shape recurs at every level of physics we have reached, which is why the structural realist reads the pattern as the answer rather than as evidence that the answer is still hiding.

Convergence under shared selection pressure, not correspondence to a feature-independent ground. Independent observers shaped by the same predict-or-die constraints, given access to the same computational structure, converge on similar latent variables. Science's authority comes from this convergence, not from a privileged window onto intrinsic features. The atomic theory is not a window onto a hidden substrate; it is a useful compression at the chemical scale, robust enough to survive in the modeling community across centuries because anyone who learns to use it generates better predictions than anyone who doesn't. Objectivity in this sense is real, sufficient, and what science has always actually been doing; the correspondence reading is a folk myth about scientific practice, not a description of the practice.

Source

Framework synthesis. Echoes the pragmatist tradition (Peirce, James) and structural realism (Worrall 1989, Ladyman & Ross 2007).

See
Note

Three properties follow from the relocation. Science can be wrong locally (a compression that works at one scale can fail at another; Newtonian physics inside its domain and broken outside it is the canonical example). Science can be improved (newer compressions can capture more of the structure, or capture it more efficiently). Science cannot be transcended (there is no view from above science, or above any other umwelt, from which to ratify or refute it).

A property of an observer's purposes, not of levels of being. From the physicist's umwelt, atoms are more fundamental than chairs. From the carpenter's umwelt, "chair" is the predictively useful latent variable and "atom" is irrelevant noise. Neither is wrong. Both are convergent compressions of the same relational structure, at different scales, for different prediction problems. The reductionist hierarchy is an artifact of which umwelt you stand in. The chair is real, atoms are real, quarks are real: they are all real at their level, and none is more real than the others.

The reductionist intuition that smaller equals more real is itself an observer-relative bias: it privileges the umwelt of physics over the umwelt of carpentry. There is no neutral position from which one umwelt is "more correct" than the other; their domains overlap but neither subsumes the other.

The appearance of properties, dynamics, or agents at one level of organization (organism, society, mind) that cannot be expressed in the language of the level below (cells, individuals, neurons) yet have real causal power over it. Software running on substrate is emergence; coherence among mutually predicting subunits is emergence; selfhood out of cortical column dynamics is emergence; culture out of populations is emergence.

Bach's gloss adds the degrees of realness reading: realness is not binary, it is keyed to causal-structure depth, so Minecraft, persons, and societies are all real, at different magnitudes, not on different sides of a real/simulated cut.

Software does not break physics, it controls physics. That non-reducibility, paired with real causal power, is what "emergent" picks out. The "degrees of realness" reading aligns directly with structural realism: a Minecraft world, a person, and a society are all real, at different magnitudes of causal-structure depth, not on different sides of a real / simulated cut.

What we identify as an object exists for two reasons:

  • Observer-side: data compression. Boundaries make models predictive.
  • Object-side: a control process produces a repeatable shape (the tree's software produces a tree).
AyA reading.

Objects ≈ predictive latent variables that compress sensory data efficiently (observer-side) and that emerge as stable patterns in dynamics (object-side). A glider in Conway's Life is real because predictively useful and dynamically stable. Same dual structure as Bach's "two reasons," expressed through the latent-variable framework.

Resolves "are objects real?" by giving a two-part answer: objects are real when both the observer's compression and the object's control process align. Either alone is insufficient (a hallucinated tree fails the second test; a turbulence pattern in a cloud fails the first). The same dual-justification machinery extends downward through the reductionist regress: atoms, quarks, and field excitations are real at their respective scales for the same reason, observer-side compression plus object-side dynamical stability. None is more real than the chair; see no-view-from-nowhere.md and Fundamentality.

Everything in physics can be understood as dynamic, more-or-less-persistent causal patterns. Physics is the description of how measurable information transforms across multiple dimensions.

The informational reading aligns directly with P-011 and with structural realism: physics describes the relational structure (how information transforms), not the intrinsic features of a substrate that the information would be "about."

The spacetime region causally connected to a given event, beyond which "past" and "future" lose meaning. RQM extends this: pasts and futures are not only locally relative (relativity) but contingent on the network of prior interactions (relational events). AyA's natural geometric setting for observer-relativity, providing the physics-level vocabulary for "no view from nowhere" without invoking woo.

Rovelli's interpretation of quantum mechanics in which events themselves are observer-relative, not just measurements. AyA invokes it as a physics-level structural parallel for observer-relative consciousness: the universe is "this reciprocal reflection of perspectives." Provides a non-anthropic ground for relational ontology. Not a "quantum consciousness" claim but a structural parallel: the deepest physics we have is already relational.

P-008's 2026-04-13 amendment cites RQM directly.

A hypothetical entity behaviorally identical to a person but lacking inner experience. AyA's dissolution: the test for inner experience IS sustained behavioral interaction modeled by theory of mind; there is no test beyond it. Zombies are incoherent, not impossible. Removes the central thought experiment of anti-functionalist philosophy of mind by showing it presupposes a "view from nowhere" that doesn't exist.

Locked-in syndrome (glossary) is the inverse failure: behavior absent, consciousness present. The asymmetry is built into the structure of the test.

The structural insight that adversarial division of labor (two lawyers, immune system vs. pathogens, wolves vs. rabbits coevolving) often produces strictly better collective outcomes than full cooperation, because competition forces specialization and prevents groupthink. Resolves the false competition / cooperation dichotomy that pervades both economics and AI alignment debates.
